I will introduce some of my favorite yerba mate recipes in this article. If you want to experiment with different flavors and textures, you are in the right place.

Keep on reading and try these delicious and refreshing recipes at home!

Yerba Mate Tea with Mint, Citrus, and Ginger

This one is one of my all-time favorite yerba mate recipes. It is easy to make and can be enjoyed hot or cold!

Equipment: French press

Preparation time: 10 – 15 minutes

Servings: 2 to 4 glasses depending on the size of your French press

Ingredients:

  • Yerba mate loose leaf tea
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Citrus fruit (lemon, lime, calamansi, etc.) cut into small pieces
  • Fresh ginger root

Instructions:

  1. Grate or slice mint leaves, citrus fruit, and ginger and put them into a french press. The amount of each ingredient depends on how much you want that particular flavor. For example, you can start with 2 tbsp mint leaves, 2 tbsp citrus fruit, and 2 tsp of ginger.
  2. Next, add the desired amount of yerba mate loose leaf tea (3 – 6 tbsp). If you don’t have any yerba mate yet but are thinking about buying some, read my Guayaki yerba mate review for an organic high-quality product.
  3. Add some cold water. Just enough to wet all of the yerba mate. Let it sit for a minute and then add hot water (about 80 Celsius or 175 Fahrenheit). Let the tea brew for 5 minutes and press the plunger down.
  4. Pout into mugs or glasses and serve. Now you have a very tasty and refreshing flavored yerba mate tea!

You can experiment with different ingredients to flavor your yerba mate tea. In addition, you can use honey or other sweeteners. If you don’t have a French press, you can use any pot or container and then pour the drink into mugs through a strainer.

This recipe also makes an excellent iced mate! Just let it cool down a little bit and add some ice or put it in the refrigerator.

Yerba Mate Ice Cream Recipe

Yerba mate ice cream is a tasty, energizing, and refreshing dessert. This recipe is a bit more complicated and takes some time to prepare but it’s definitely worth it!

Equipment: Ice cream machine (optional). It is easiest to use an ice cream machine for preparing this recipe but you can also do it without one.

Preparation time: about 2.5 hours

Servings: 3 to 5 servings

Ingredients:

  • Yerba mate loose leaf tea
  • 2 cups (or 0.5 l) milk
  • 5 egg yokes
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • Whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Heat the milk in a kettle and remove from heat as soon as it starts to boil. Add about 3 teaspoons of loose leaf yerba mate and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then filter it so that the leaves are removed and heat it again.
  2. Mix the sugar with egg yokes and stir it until the mixture is foamy. Pour it in the hot milk infusion while stirring. Keep on low heat and stir until it becomes thick.
  3. When the mixture is thick enough, remove it from heat. It should be quite thick and not completely liquid anymore. If it’s not thick enough you can add some whipped cream after it has cooled down.
  4. Now you can use your ice cream machine if you have one. If you don’t have it, put the mix in the freezer. You have to remove it from the freezer every 15 minutes and mix it slowly to keep it homogeneous. You have to repeat this for about 5 to 6 times and then it’s ready!

Coconut Yerba Mate Sorbet Recipe

Here is an exotic sorbet that you should definitely try. A refreshing, creamy, earthy sorbet, full of antioxidants and vitamins coming from yerba mate.

This sorbet is delicious and healthy at the same time!

Equipment: Ice cream machine (optional)

Preparation time: about 2 hours

Servings: 3 to 5 servings

Ingredients:

  • Yerba mate loose leaf
  • 1 can of coconut milk (full-fat)
  • 1/3 cup of honey
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt (sea salt or Himalayan salt)

Instructions:

  1. Brew about 3 cups of yerba mate tea, add honey and chill it.
  2. Combine it with the coconut milk, vanilla, and salt and stir well.
  3. Use an ice cream maker to churn it for about 30 minutes and then put it into a freezer for about an hour. If you don’t have an ice cream maker put it into a freezer and follow the same instructions as with the yerba mate ice cream recipe (see above, stir slowly every 15 minutes).
  4. Serve it in nice bowls plain, or with pancakes and/or toppings!

  1. For sure I will be making the cashew latte very soon. Cashews are some of my favorite nuts, so I won’t hesitate to try this latte. I would also like to make the ice cream but without the egg yolk. What’s your best suggestion for an egg substitute?
