It was one of those rainy afternoons, the kind where the world outside feels distant and time slows down. I had been cozied up with a book, Tart curled up by my feet, but something was missing—a warm, comforting drink.
So I headed to the kitchen, rummaging through my tea collection when I spotted a tin of Earl Grey I hadn’t touched in a while. I’ve always loved its bright, citrusy bergamot aroma, but today, I was craving something a little different, something sweeter.
That’s when I saw the jar of cherries on the counter. The idea struck me—why not combine the deep, fruity sweetness of cherries with the bold flavor of Earl Grey?
I added a splash of whole milk for creaminess, and just like that, the Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea was born!

Why This Recipe is Awesome!

- Health Benefits: Earl Grey is known for its antioxidants and mood-boosting properties, while cherries offer anti-inflammatory benefits, making this drink both enjoyable and beneficial.
- Elegant Twist on a Classic: It offers a creative variation on the traditional Earl Grey tea, perfect for those who enjoy trying new spins on their favorite beverages.
Ingredients

Earl Grey tea is the foundation of this recipe, so it’s important to use a high-quality tea that has a robust flavor.
Earl Grey is known for its distinct citrusy aroma, thanks to the bergamot oil. Thus, using a tea with a pronounced bergamot note will enhance the complexity of the drink.
Cherries are the special ingredient in this recipe. If using fresh cherries, choose ripe and juicy ones. Dark, sweet cherries like the Bing variety work best because they provide a deep, rich sweetness that balances the boldness of the tea.
If fresh cherries aren’t in season, frozen or canned cherries are a good substitute. This time, I used Maraschino Cherries, which gave the drink a more candy-like flavor.
The milk adds a creamy texture to the tea, making it smooth and comforting.
You can choose any type of milk depending on your preference. Whole milk will give a rich creaminess, while almond or oat milk makes it lighter with a different taste profile.
Vanilla syrup adds sweetness and a warm, fragrant note to the tea.
You can adjust the amount of syrup depending on how sweet you want the drink to be. If using Marachino Cherries, reduce the amount of syrup since the cherries are already sweetened.
Adding a cinnamon stick is optional, but it infuses the milk with a subtle warmth and spice that complements the tea and cherry flavors beautifully. It’s a nice touch, especially for those who enjoy a hint of spice in their drinks.
Ingredients for making a Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea:

How To Make Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea
Instructions for making Earl Grey Milk Tea:
1. Steep the Cherries and Cinnamon: In a small saucepan, add the cherries and about 1/2 cup of water. Simmer on low heat for 3-5 minutes until the cherries soften and release their juices. Gently mash the cherries to help extract more flavor. Then add the cinnamon stick and steep for an additional 5 minutes.

2. Brew the Earl Grey tea: While the cherries are simmering, bring 1/2 cup of water to a boil. Steep the Earl Grey tea in the hot water for 3-5 minutes, depending on your preferred strength. Remove the tea bag or strain the loose leaves.
3. Add the milk: Pour the milk into the saucepan with the softened cherries and cinnamon. Then heat gently, stirring occasionally until the milk is warmed through.

4. Sweeten with vanilla syrup: Stir in 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla syrup into the milk and cherry mixture. You can adjust the sweetness to taste.
5. Combine the tea and milk: Pour the brewed Earl Grey tea into a cup, then strain the warm milk and cherry mixture into the same cup, pressing on the cherries to release all the juice. Stir well to combine.

6. Garnish and Serve: For an extra touch, add some foamed milk on top or garnish with a fresh cherry or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Iced Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea
To make an iced version of the Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea, first follow the recipe to brew the tea with vanilla and cinnamon. Allow the brewed tea to cool to room temperature after preparation.
Once cooled, refrigerate the tea until it’s fully chilled. To serve, fill a glass with ice cubes and pour the chilled tea over the ice. For an extra touch, you can add a splash of additional milk or a cinnamon stick for garnish.
Enjoy your refreshing iced Cherry Earl Grey Milk Tea!
Recommendations & Alternatives
- Try using black cherry preserves instead of fresh cherries for a richer, more intense cherry flavor.
- For a more luxurious treat, add a splash of heavy cream or whipped cream on top for extra richness.
- Blend fresh cherries with a bit of milk and froth it to create a light, airy cherry-flavored foam to top the tea.
- For an adult version, add a small amount of cherry liqueur like Kirsch or Cherry Heering to give it a subtle, boozy kick.

Does it need to be Earl Grey or would English Breakfast work?
The latter being one of my favorites and always in my cupboard.
Hi Amber,
Yes, you can absolutely make this recipe with English Breakfast Tea (or any other black tea)!
However, the taste will be slightly different mainly because English Breakfast Tea doesn’t have a bergamot flavor like Earl Grey.

Pretty sure you won’t die if you just try it yourself.
This looks so good! What a great combination of flavors!
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
Hi Vanessa,
It can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days for optimal freshness and safety.
