5 Refreshing Iced Herbal Tea Recipes for Summer

Share this post:

Need some refreshment for a hot summer day? It’s time to ditch those store-bought iced teas full of sugar and artificial ingredients. A much better option is to make your own revitalizing drink with fresh ingredients.

Here are my favorite iced herbal tea recipes for summer. These healthy and refreshing drinks are sure to cool you down and quench your thirst!

I have been drinking herbal teas daily for a long time and tried all kinds of hot and cold options along the way. For this article, I have picked my top 5 iced tea recipes so that you can also try them.

Whether you are looking for an energy boost, a spicy and fulfilling milk-based drink, or a fresh herbal infusion, you can find something suitable here.

TIP: Use one of our recommended iced tea makers to prepare your favorite drink conveniently.

Ingredients and Health Benefits

First, let’s take a quick look at the most important ingredients used in these recipes.

Mint

Mint is one of my favorite herbs for iced teas. It brings a natural freshness, unlike any other ingredient. Vibrant green mint leaves are also eye candy, so you can use them to garnish your drinks and make them visually impressive.

mint

Peppermint has a high menthol content, which gives it a strong flavor and makes it an effective digestive aid. It can also be used as a stress reliever, relaxant, and breath freshener.

Spearmint has a sweeter and more delicate taste compared to peppermint. Recent research also indicates that it’s good for our brain as it enhances cognitive health and working memory.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus is known for its beautiful flowers and has many health benefits. Hibiscus tea is an effective natural remedy for treating high blood pressure, burning fat, and losing weight.

Ginger

Ginger is one of the healthiest herbs available and has been used as a natural remedy for thousands of years.

Ginger tea is good for treating many health conditions including digestive issues (such as acid reflux) as well as pain and stiffness. It also adds a nice kick to your iced tea with its pungent and spicy aroma.

fresh and dried ginger

The best option for all of these ingredients is to get them fresh from your own garden or buy them from a supermarket. If you cant get your hands on fresh herbs, you can always use dried ones as well.

Now, there is one more ingredient that needs to be introduced here:

Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is a South American herbal tea that is full of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.

loose leaf yerba mate

It is an energizing drink that is great for losing weight and burning fat. In addition, it stimulates your immune system and can help with improving cholesterol levels.

Super Cool – Lemon, Peppermint, and Ginger Iced Tea

Here is a perfect iced herbal tea for cooling you off in the summer heat. It’s super healthy, easy to prepare, and sure to jazz you up with its fresh taste!

lemon ginger mint iced tea

Ingredients for 4 servings of Super Cool iced tea:

  • 2 cups of water
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger (or ½ tablespoon of ground dry ginger)
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh peppermint leaves (or 1 tablespoon of dried ones)
  • Plenty of ice

Optional ingredients:

  • Honey (or other sweetener)

How to prepare it:

  1. Pour 2 cups of water in a tea kettle or a saucepan. Add the ginger and mint leaves. Bring to simmer and cover.
  2. Let it simmer for a few minutes and then turn off the heat.
  3. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes. Now you can add some honey if you want to make it sweet (I usually add a few teaspoons).
  4. Take a pitcher and fill it halfway with ice. Pour the tea into the pitcher through a strainer. Add the lemon juice and mix with a spoon.
  5. You can serve it in glasses and use fresh mint leaves and lemon slices as garnish. Enjoy!

You can also cold-brew it overnight using the same method as the “Fresh and Fruity” recipe (later in this article).

Milky and Spicy – Iced Chai Latte

Masala chai is a popular Indian drink that is made with milk, black tea, sugar, and various herbs and spices. Today it’s popular all over the world and you can find a version of it in most trendy cafes.

I love drinking this spicy-sweet beverage on cold winter days and in the summertime as well. Yet, on a hot day, an iced version is even more tempting.

You can also use plant-based milk if you don’t want to consume dairy. Iced chai made with cashew milk is as good, if not better, than the version with cow’s milk.

The best way to make a batch of delicious and refreshing iced chai is to follow my recipe for authentic Indian masala chai. Then simply let it cool down and refrigerate it.

You can serve it to your friends and family by pouring it into ice-filled glasses!

An Easier Way

If you feel like getting all the ingredients is too much hassle, there is also an easier way to make excellent iced chai tea. You can use these organic chai tea bags from Buddha Teas.

Here is how to make 2 servings of delicious iced chai in a matter of minutes:

  1. Add 1/2 cup of milk (dairy or plant-based) and 1/2 cup of water into a small saucepan and heat until it’s simmering.
  2. Add 2 bags of Buddha Teas Organic Chai Tea and let it steep for about 5 minutes. Stir to avoid the milk from burning.
  3. Remove from heat and let it cool down for a while. Add sugar (or honey) if you like it sweet.
  4. Pour into glasses filled with ice. Voilà, it’s ready to be served!

Fruity and Fresh – Cold-Brewed Lime, Apple, and Spearmint Iced Tea

This delicious and healthy iced tea combines sour lime and sweet apple juice with the gentle freshness of spearmint. A sweet variety of apples works best for this recipe as it balances the acidic lime juice.

lime apple mint iced tea

Ingredients for 4 servings of Fruity and Fresh iced tea:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of freshly squeezed apple juice
  • Juice of 3 limes
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh spearmint leaves (or 1 tablespoon of dried)

For serving:

  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Crushed ice

How to prepare it:

  1. Add the ingredients into a pitcher and let it brew overnight in the refrigerator.
  2. Serve in tall glasses with plenty of crushed ice and fresh mint leaves.

I like to prepare this recipe by cold-brewing it, but you can also make a hot spearmint infusion and then cool it down the same way as the “Super Cool” recipe above.

Tereré – Iced Yerba Mate from Paraguay

Tereré is the traditional cold-brewed version of yerba mate tea. This refreshing and healthy drink originates from Paraguay.

Yerba mate has relatively high caffeine content, so this drink is a real energy booster!

In addition to water and loose leaf yerba mate, you can use herbs and fruit juice when preparing it. Here is the complete recipe for preparing tereré.

Agua de Jamaica – Iced Mexican Hibiscus Tea

Agua de Jamaica is a version of iced hibiscus tea that is especially popular in Mexico.

The most common ingredients for this bright-colored beverage are hibiscus flowers, sugar, and lime juice. You can also add spices, like cinnamon, to make it even more delicious.

iced hibiscus aqua de jamaica

I usually first prepare hibiscus concentrate and then use it to make Agua de Jamaica. It takes a while to prepare the concentrate but after that, it’s very quick and convenient to produce several portions of iced hibiscus tea.

You can find the instructions for making Agua de Jamaica here.

If you are planning to have a backyard BBQ-party, prepare the concentrate in the previous evening. Now you can serve all the quests with this tasty beverage without any extra hassle. And why not spice it up with some rum or gin, if wish to do so!

  1. Hi Joonas,

Your article comes the right time for the hot summer here in my region! I don’t want to drink too many artificial beverages that we find in most supermarkets, so I think you do provide value for people like me.

I love you combine mint, lemon, ginger for the #1 super cool, that will be my priority to make tomorrow. I will try to add some apple juice like the #3 Fruity and Fresh to replace honey to see what will happen.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Matt

    • Hi Manuela,

Iced chai latte is also one of my favorites!

20 years ago I was just drinking some regular black and green tea from the supermarket. Then I started trying out different herbal teas and realized I like them more. I also noticed that they are great natural remedies for digestive problems, colds and flu, and many other illnesses. The more herbal teas I was drinking and experimenting with different recipes and ingredients, the more I liked them. Then after starting this website I became even more passionate about it!

Enjoy your iced tea and stay healthy!
