Before we start brewing, here are a few words about the history of this popular drink.

The origins of Masala Chai date back over 5,000 years to ancient India and Siam, where it was often brewed as a healing herbal concoction.

Over the centuries, as tea became a global commodity, chai transformed into a beloved beverage enjoyed around the world, often savored for its comforting warmth and complex spice profile.

Bringing vanilla into the mix adds a contemporary twist and offers a creamy sweetness that complements the bold spices perfectly!

Ingredients

Here’s a detailed explanation of each ingredient used in the Iced Vanilla Chai Latte, highlighting what’s important when choosing them.

Iced Vanilla Chai Latte Ingredients

Black Tea: Black tea forms the base of this chai latte, providing a deep flavor foundation that complements the spices as well as some energy boost in for of caffeine. Choose a robust, full-bodied black tea like Assam or Darjeeling, as these will hold up well against the strong flavors of the spices and vanilla. The quality of the tea will significantly influence the overall taste of the latte.

Spices (Cinnamon, Cardamom, Cloves, Ginger): These spices are essential for creating the authentic chai flavor profile. Each spice offers health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory properties and aiding digestion. Always choose whole spices that you can grind yourself for the freshest and most potent flavor. If you must use pre-ground spices, make sure they are freshly purchased and from a reputable source.

Vanilla Bean or Vanilla Extract: Vanilla adds a sweet, creamy note that balances the spice of the chai. If possible, use a real vanilla bean for the best flavor, as it provides a more complex and less artificial taste than most extracts. If using extract, look for a pure vanilla extract without synthetic additives.

Milk (Dairy or Plant-Based): Milk softens and melds the flavors together, providing a creamy texture that is important for any latte. It also tempers the spices, so the drink is not too overpowering. Select a milk that froths well if you prefer a creamy texture. Whole dairy milk is my choice, and for plant-based alternatives, oat milk and almond milk work well.

Ingredients for making 2 portions of Iced Vanilla Chai Latte:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 black tea bags or 2 teaspoons of loose tea (preferably a strong blend like Assam or Darjeeling)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 inch piece grated fresh ginger or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped (or 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or honey), adjust to taste
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based, such as almond or oat milk)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional garnishes: a sprinkle of cinnamon, vanilla pods, or star anise

How to Make Iced Vanilla Chai Latte

Instructions for making 2 portions of Iced Vanilla Chai Latte:

1. Brew the Chai: In a small saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the tea bags, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse the water.

2. Add Vanilla and Sweetener: Remove the saucepan from the heat. If using a vanilla bean, add it now, scraping the seeds into the tea and dropping the pod in as well. Stir in the sugar (or honey), adjusting the amount according to your taste preferences for sweetness.

3. Cool the Mixture: Remove the tea bags and strain the tea. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature and then refrigerate it.

Note: It’s important to cool the tea properly, otherwise the warm tea will melt the ice, and you’ll end up with a watery drink.

4. Prepare the Milk: In a separate container, froth cold milk using a blender, milk frother, or by shaking it vigorously in a tightly sealed jar.

4. Pour the Tea into a Glass: Fill a large glass or jar with ice cubes. Pour the cooled tea over the ice, filling the glass about two-thirds full.

Tips & Variations

  • Experiment with Milk Alternatives: Try using coconut milk for a tropical twist or cashew milk for a creamier texture. Both alternatives add a unique flavor profile that complements the chai spices.
  • Add Espresso Shot: For a caffeinated kick, add a shot of espresso to the iced latte. The robust coffee flavor pairs nicely with the sweet and spicy chai, creating an even more energizing beverage.
  • Sweetener Varieties: Experiment with different sweeteners such as maple syrup or agave nectar to vary the sweetness and flavor.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: Before serving, drizzle some melted dark chocolate or chocolate syrup over the top of the frothed milk for a decadent finish.
  • Floral Infusion: Steep edible flowers like lavender or chamomile with the chai tea. This will add a gentle floral flavor that softens the spice intensity and adds an elegant touch to your iced latte.
